We went around Oberlin College campus looking for some positivity and excitement about the beginning of the new school year. We asked students who had been the kindest to them during their first week on campus.

Intro: Hi I’m Callie, I use she/her pronouns, and I’m a first year undecided major. Hi I’m Mackenzie, I use she/her pronouns, and I’m a third year psychology and neuroscience major. Hi I’m Riley, I use she/her pronouns, and I’m a communications/psych double major. We went around Oberlin College campus looking for some positivity and excitement about the beginning of the new school year. We asked students who had been the kindest to them during their first week on campus.

Outro: We asked a variety of people and got a variety of responses. While there were some common answers like roommates/housemates, the diversity in answers showcase how kindness can be found everywhere at Oberlin. Many students found support during their first week in friends, teachers, advisors, and more!

Transcript:

Emily: This is Emily. I wanna say my roommate. She, we were kind of random, we're both on the softball team, but we just really clicked like we get together so well. We have like the same thinking styles and like, she just genuinely like really has helped me blossom into like Oberlin.

Riley G: Perfect. Thank you.

Riley C-L: Hi, my name's Riley.

Just to clarify, this is a different Riley than one of our interviewers.

Riley C-L: I use she/her pronouns. and I'm a third year. I'm really liking my group in biology right now. They're all super supportive and nice. And they're the kind of people where, like you, you've only hung out with them for a few hours, but you immediately feel like they're your friends. Yeah, just like a really fun, friendly group that I'm like, makes me, it makes the class more enjoyable.

Sophia: I'm Sophia. She/ her. I am a third year. Probably my good friend, who picked me up from the car dealership when my car was needing service like two days ago.

Sahil: My name's Sahil. I'm a second year. My pronouns are he, him. I think my academic advisor really helped me out a lot actually. 'cause I was trying to figure out what classes I was gonna take in order to fulfill all my requirements and what not. He was very accommodating and understanding of what I was looking for .

Simon: Hello, my name is Simon Sway. I go by he/him pronouns. I am a first year and I'm a dual degree student with vocal performance and psychology. Well, I have to say I've liked the people on my floor in Dascomb, they're pretty cool people. , But I think the cake goes to my private vocal teacher, Professor LeFebvre. He has been incredibly amazing. I've learned so much from him in techniques and vocal support and such. And, I'm just grateful to be a student.

Riley G: Perfect. Thank you.

Kate: My name is Kate. I use she/her pronouns and I'm a first year. Probably my teammates. They've been very supportive in helping me find my way around campus. And like we've had team meals, which has been really great, getting accustomed to eating in the dining hall and yeah, it's just been great having them, their support.

Oddie: Hi, I'm Oddie. I use they/them pronouns. I'm a fourth year. This semester, the kindest to me… it's probably all of my housemates. We just moved into an off-campus house together, so Maddie, Emma, and Maria, because we just got to build a little home together.
